The Trimethoprim molecule in 3-D

Trimethoprim is 2,4-Diamino-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl) pyrimidine. It acts as a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, reducing synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid, an essential precursor in the bacterial synthesis of the intermediate Thymidine monophosphate which is needed for DNA replication.

Trimethoprim is often used in combination with sulfamethoxazole (as co-trimoxazole), Septrin.
