The amoxicillin molecule in 3-D

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic of the moderate-spectrum penicillin (amino-penicillin) group.

It is used to treat a number of bacterial infections and even to protect against the possibility of complications in some procedures e.g. dental work.

Some bacteria have developed resistance to it by producing an enzyme beta-lactamase (penicillinase) to break it down; in these cases amoxicillin may be used in conjuction with a beta-lactamase inhibitor such as clavulanic acid (co-amoxiclav).
