Making your own wine

Technicians' information Assuming 16 pupils or working groups

Per class

Incubator, set at 25°C - 30°C required for one week to accommodate two beakers containing a total of thirty two test tubes.

Supply of (sweet) apple juice, to fill 2/3 test tubes.

Per working group

Approximately 0.5 g dried yeast, presented on a labelled piece of paper or in a dish.

Cotton wool - enough to make two substantial plugs for test tubes.

2 labels or a marker pen

Making your own wine

1. 2/3 fill two test tubes with apple juice. Label the tubes A and B.

2 Sprinkle a few grains of dried yeast into test tube A only,

3 Plug both tubes with cotton wool. Place the tubes in the incubator, set at 25°C - 30°C. Support the tubes in beakers.

4. After one week, remove the cotton wool plugs from both tubes and smell their contents. Record your results.

DO NOT TASTE THE APPLE JUICE
