There are actually 3 forms of vitamin B6:
pyridoxine,
pyridoxal, and
pyridoxamine.
These are all based on
pyridine with different side groups.
Inside the cell, each of these is converted into
pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), which acts as coenzyme in the synthesis of amino acids and
neurotransmitters, and other reactions.
It is involved in transamination reactions, some decarboxylation and deamination reactions of amino acids and in the amination of some sugars.
