Erythromycin is a antibiotic belonging to the macrolide group.
Macrolides act as bacterial protein synthesis inhibitors, binding to the bacterial ribosome,
preventing addition of amino acids to polypeptide chains.
They consist of quite large macrocyclic lactone rings with unusual deoxy sugars L-cladinose and D-desosamine attached
